High Commissioner of the Republic of Maldives to India

Ms. Aishath Azeema's distinguished career in the Maldives Foreign Service spans over three decades, beginning in 1988. Her exceptional leadership skills, strategic vision, and dedication to public service have earned her a reputation as a highly respected and accomplished diplomat.

Throughout her extensive tenure, Azeema gained valuable experience across various departments, making significant contributions to the Department of External Resources and the Foreign Relations Department. Her expertise in trade diplomacy was showcased as a key member of the negotiation team for the Maldives' first bilateral Free Trade Agreement.
Ms. Azeema has served in various capacities, including as Ambassador to China, Minister-Counsellor in India, and Head of Mission in the United Kingdom. In these roles, she has played a key part in shaping the Maldives' foreign policy and promoting its interests abroad. Her extensive experience has equipped her with a deep understanding of international relations, global governance, and diplomatic protocol.

Ms. Azeema's expertise spans a range of areas, including trade diplomacy, bilateral cooperation, and strategic engagement. She has a proven track record of fostering stronger ties between the Maldives and its key partners, and has been instrumental in promoting the country's bilateral, economic and cultural interests on the global stage. One of the highlights of her career was her five-year tenure as Minister-Counsellor at the Embassy of the Republic of Maldives in India, where she served as Head of Chancery, overseeing the Embassy's operations and actively working to promote and strengthen bilateral relations between the Maldives and India. She has also held various other key roles, including Joint Secretary in charge of the China and Japan Divisions, Additional Secretary heading the India Division and the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) Division, Minister (Chargé d'affaires) at the Embassy of the Republic of Maldives in London, and Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Maldives to China from 2019 to 2023.

Ms. Aishath Azeema was appointed as the High Commissioner Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Maldives to the Republic of India on 30 October 2024, by the President of Maldives.

Ms. Aishath Azeema is indeed a role model for many, balancing her professional commitments with family life. She is married with two daughters, demonstrating that dedication to public service and nurturing personal relationships are not mutually exclusive. Her extensive career in the Maldives Foreign Service is a testament to her commitment to her country and her expertise in diplomacy.
